The Buffalo Stampede began in 1998 as Senior Gold Project for Girl Scout Troop 208. The troop chose Mary Martha Outreach as the recipient of profits from the buffalo. The buffalo sculpture was created by Sandra Van Zant. They are a unique art form with each individual model painted with its own design and given its own name.
