Volubilis was an important Roman town situated near the westernmost border of Roman conquests.
It was built on the site of the previous Punic settlement, but that settlement overlies
an earlier neolithic habitation.[2]
During the reign of the Berber King Juba II and his son Ptolemy of Mauretania between
the year 32 BC and 40 AD Walili was a powerful ancient capital of Mauritania kingdom,
The fertile lands of the province produced many commodities such as grain and olive oil, contributing to the province's wealth and prosperity.
The city became the administrative center of the province
in Roman Africa called Mauretania Tingitana.
