Governor de Oņate in 1599 assigned the first missionary here to convert the Indians to Catholicism. At the time, about 2,000 people inhabited the pueblo. At the time of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, the Pecos Indians destroyed the misson and killed the priest. In 1693 the village was retaken by the Spanish.
