So I walk down to Battery Park at the tip of Lower Manhattan to get a sunset photo of Lady Liberty. I quickly realize that my vantage point would not make much of a photo. Cranes that load ocean freighters line the horizon behind the statue. I arrived at the park with a couple hours to spare before sunset so I have time to devise Plan B.
The Staten Island Ferry kept going past ferrying commuters across the bay and it dawned on me that it could be a perfect vantage point for a sunset shot. The ferry terminal was close by and the cost of the fares to get over to Staten Island and back would likely be less than $20. Off I went.
Once at the terminal, I asked a friendly-looking local where to buy tickets for the ferry. She explained that it was free. FREE. The subway wasn't free. Crossing bridges or taking tunnels were tolled. Free? Yep. Best touristy deal out there. Highly recommend you do this fun excursion if you make it to NYC.
