Pileated Woodpecker

Lake Manzanita, Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park, California, USA

Not the best image quality, but it's only the second
PW I've ever seen. Hard to miss when it is around, it's
over a foot tall. This one, a female, was feeding for termites or
perhaps carpenter ants in a stand of dead trees. It used its long
tongue to probe previously-made holes of about an inch diameter.
I don't know if it had made the holes or was benefiting from
the work of others.

other sizes: small medium original auto
