Somehow the real meaning of Memorial Day has been lost.
As a former serviceman, I appreciate the fact that all who have served are remembered on this day, at least by merchants that are looking for a way to increase their sales. And as a worker, I appreciate many employers giving their employees an extra day off, a paid holiday and a three day weekend.
HOWEVER, do we really remember what this day represents ?? It has questioned origins, with many communities claiming to be first, but it was first officially observed on 30 May, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of BOTH Union AND Confederate graves in Arlington Cemetery.
It is a day to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. Too many young Americans of all religious, race, and ethnic groups have made this ultimate sacrifice; on American shores during the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War; as well as overseas, in World War I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as many other fronts that we have no knowledge of (yes there are) - so that we all may have the freedoms that we take for granted.
This peaceful scene was taken at the Alexandria-Pineville National Cemetery in Pineville Louisiana.
I have difficulty visiting places like this, knowing that I am standing among those brave individuals who have given anyway a part of their lives to serve us.
To those who passed away while in service, we all owe a debt of gratitude, and we salute you today.
OK, I'll get off my soapbox now.
