This native plant grows in rich, damp woods, flowers in late spring and produces deep blue berries in late summer. The common name comes from the supposed similarity in taste of the tuberous root to a cucumber. It was used as food by native peoples, and was considered to have medicinal properties. However, I would not encourage anyone to try eating the root. I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to wild plants deemed edible!
