Jutta Arctic (Oeneis jutta)

This morning I went out looking for two bog speciality butterflies, Jutta Arctic and Brown Elfin, and a bog specialty dragonfly called an Ebony Boghaunter. I wasn't expecting that I would photograph the Jutta Arctic because they tend to be too far from the boardwalk to photograph or that I would even see the Ebony Boghaunter because they are rare, but with some amazing luck I was able to photograph both. I was also able to get a few photos of a Brown Elfin. This was a first for getting photos for all these species. I had struck out on my previous attempts to photograph them.

I do research on butterflies, especially the Arctics (genus Oeneis). I came upon your page in that way. In my experience, you were also lucky to get such a great pose for the Arctic. The photo of the Brown Elfin is fantastic. I can actually count scales over the surface of the wing...if I were inclined to do so! JPPelham

Jutta arctic would be a new one for me. Fantastic find and shot. Can't get over how incredibly clear and sharp the image is. V
