JFK's funeral with his son John Jr. saluting his coffin before it was transported to Arlington National Cemetery for burial

St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington, DC

The new president, Lyndon B. Johnson, issued Presidential Proclamation 3561, the day after JFK's assassination, declaring Monday, November 25th, as a national day of mourning and only essential emergency workers were to be at their posts. This allowed the American public to watch live coverage of JFK's funeral events on television.
