Ostrich ferns (Matteuccia struthiopteris)

Photographed in Larose Forest where ferns of all types are abundant. This is the fern that is collected for food in early spring when it is just appearing, the famous fiddleheads being a delicacy. The dark brown object to the left is a fertile frond from the previous year. It remains visible all winter.
