Black swallowtail (Papillio polyxenes), male, newly emerged

It was a red-letter day today, for this swallowtail finally emerged from its chrysalis which I had kept over the winter. From autumn until a few weeks ago, they remained in a container in the garden shed. Then I brought them (there are two chrysalises)out into the garden. Today, this beauty emerged and is now sitting on a cedar tree drying his wings and flexing them every so often, prior to flying away. Black swallowtails overwinter as a chrysalis.

An excellent close up of this beautiful butterfly. Is it a large one or is it that you captured it so close up, Christine? BV
