This mine. like most, has a sad history. On May 1, 1900, a spark ignited the fine haze of coal dust
deep underground and the Winter Quarters #4 mine exploded. 100 miners were killed instantly and another
99 died from the poisonous aftermath, making this one of the worst coal mine disasters in history.
