Hoary Elfin (Callophrys polio)

Big day for butterflies. I went out looking specifically for these Hoary Elfins and they were out in abundance. These butterflies have localized populations and can only be found in a few specific places in the Ottawa area. There was a mass migration of Red Admirals underway today as well. I saw nearly 70 individuals through out the day, 34 of them along one 400 m stretch of trail close to home and at least 15 in and around my yard. I also saw a nice variety of other butterflies today...Question Mark, Gray Comma, Eastern Pine Elfin, Mourning Cloak...and a number of firsts of the seasons for birds too including Pine and Yellow-rumped Warblers.

I saw more Red Admirals today than I saw birds! This is a lovely capture with rich colour and great saturation.
