Small milkweed bugs (Lygaeus kalmii), adults and nymphs

There was a huge aggregation of both adults and nymphs on a stand of milkweeds, but a couple of days later, the insects had dispersed. In spring, adults lay eggs on the milkweeds. Adults nectar on the flowers of milkweeds, although it seems they have adapted to seed-eating in the spring as they usually emerge very early (overwintering as adults) before any nectar-producing plants are around.
