That September And Grade Five
That September And Grade Five
The first school day of September
Glowed with an Autumn veneer
The completed day dispersed us all
With great notices of cheer
The accomplished voices grew louder
The more we ran and raced
We never left school during summer
Her companied plains we embraced
Home with waving excitement
We seemed far less than sober
Our teachers great, he is really nice
And his name is Mr. Cober
Well groomed boys renewed the challenge
Of learning the social graces.
Girls always new brought shyness too
And a few of them had braces
Fresh painted everything seemed for me
The gym floor glazed then soon
Mr. Barkers band played you see
Entertaining us with a tune.
Baseball bubble gum cards did slide
Skip rope in ones and two’s
The girls jumped side by side
And home base destroyed some shoes
From four grades we missed their smile
How’d the carnival rides go round?
Northtown plaza stretched for a mile
Five years of rocking sound
Christmas concerts, standing stairwell
Yo Yo’s and mystical skill
Kick ball hockey, the recess bell
Helping a friend when they got ill.
Learned Marco Polo his travels far away
Deep snow faces defending honor
Along pine paths every day
The future we’d never ponder
Valentine pups shared their thoughts
Receiving a post together
Store bought gems and secret plots
Red hearts and chilly weather
Fire alarms pass Special Class
Talking and walking free
Poking friends as you pass
Hall paintings for all to see
Operetta season dressing well
Amazed with passionate zeal
Fun Fair hallway pop corn smell
And a hot dog mustard meal
Art class construction things
All colors of paints and glue
Angles with big Christmas wings
Everything done was new
Bobby and Yogi, Gary and Paul
Kevin and Chuck and Doug
Rushed from lunch to play some ball
A home run made them smug
Dorothy, Elizabeth, Joan and Susan
Bonny, Barb and Louise
Ball in the sock bounced amusing
While boys would laugh and tease
The music raised us and others
The Willow Theatre and a favorite store
Easy winters with stay at home mothers
Just as it was before
Ian’s class party when hearts were new
Field Day in June, prizes glory and more
School top adventures to look down at who
Jar of pennies scrambled the floor
A gift of coins of love from our heart
We learned each year to strive
Mr. Cobers love was there at the start
That September and Grade Five
