Sandhill cranes

I was taking Sasha for a walk down an abandoned rail line when I spotted these two cranes waaaay off in the fields. I was unable to get very close (and I didn't want to disturb them), so this is not a great shot sadly. But I post it because it shows how well they blend into the dry vegetation, and because it shows the brown colouration on their backs. Some Ornithologists think that the colour comes from ferrous content in some of the mud they feed in, and that the colour is spread onto their backs when they preen.

We've had a few fly overs by Sandhill Cranes this month. They are so nice to see.

Oh I love the shot and their camouflaged colouring. It's a very nice painterly effect.

Are they back early this year? We get thousands that winter here. In fact, Texas is the main fly-way and wintering spot for many birds from around the US and Canada. The drought last year and the unusually warm winter have messed up our migration routes. Here is an interesting article about the problems with this year's migration http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/01/texas-drought-bird-migrations_n_1312393.html
Nice photo considering the distance and lighting!

I had one fly over my house today, calling all the way. They are beautiful and nice to see them coming back through.

Beautiful capture.

Fabulous capture - I know you were excited to see them. We've had a lot of controversy over them here in Tennessee - thank goodness a Sandhill Crane legal hunting season was not allowed this past year - even though it was allowed in Kentucky. We have a big reserve (Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge) in Tennessee where these birds winter - estimated to be 15,000 in number on this 6,000-acre refuge.

I disagree, I think it's a great shot...perfectly balanced in construction, Christine!

They are wonderful. I am glad that they are back in your neck of the woods - means our local group of them might be back already (our osprey are.) Must get out shooting really soon.

I love to watch them. We had a couple of pair nesting here for the last couple of years.
Janet Forjan-Freedman28-Mar-2012 22:53
They're definitely well camouflaged. Nice find and capture.
