The second largest campus in the A & M system, Commerce was founded as a one building campus in 1887 as the East Texas Normal College. Fire destroyed the original campus in Cooper, a few miles north, and in 1894 the campus was relocated to Commerce because of the presence of the railroad.

These Texas Longhorns are located in the farm area a few miles south of Commerce.
