The third bird was hanging out south of High Pines just before the third crossover - on the ocean dune. Like #2 it was also big, but it was a calm bird and had less dark markings around the head and side of the nape. It never swiveled enough so that we could ever see the back of its head and so I was unable to pick up any markings. Comparing its natural markings with Birds #1 & #2 in several photos confirms that it was bird #3 for the day. (these 3 photos were taken from the car)
While Bird #2 was fidgity and paying careful attention to everything going on around it, this bird was very calm - only moving its head from side to side occasionally and enjoying the warm sun. This despite several flocks of Dunlin zooming right past it from the ocean side (its back) to fan out on the emerging flats on the bay side. It seemed bemused whereas #2 would likely have tied its neck in a knot! It occurred to us that perhaps bird #3 might have already had its fill of Dunlin for the day!
