Third time's the charm! I had tried to photograph this rare winter visitor on two previous occasions without any success. The first time I tried I didn't even see him and the second time I only saw him briefly. That second time, when I saw him briefly, I saw him in the open water when I first got there, then took my eyes off him for a moment to make sure the river ice I was walking on was safe, and when I looked back up he was gone. I tried for half hour to relocate him without any success.
Feeling defeated and discouraged I decided to give up and not return for a third try, but this morning I had a change of mind, encouraged by Penny who had luck photographing him recently, and when I got there I spotted him right away on the path down to the river.
