20120208 - 1 478 SERIES - Pine Marten.jpg

Algonquin Park

Five images of the adult Pine Marten. Whilst protecting its food supply (the suet feeder on the tree trunk above) the adult Marten faces a conundrum - "Who to attack; that pesty little one, some 30 feet away, or those nearby photographer intruders? Wisely we backed off a bit.

Top image: The adult Marten is keeping its eye on the juvenile who at some distance is eying to get to the suet.

About to chase after junior, the Marten suddenly looks in our direction as if to check if it is safe to chase junior whilst not forfeiting the suet to us.

The adult next turns its attention in the direction of junior again. This time baring its sharp teeth.

Next it gives us one last threatening, bare teeth look, at which point we quickly back off.

Satisfied at our hasty retreat, the adult turns its attention back to junior and subsequently proceeds to chase it up a tall pine tree.

A fascinating series, Hank. I can honestly say I've never seen this critter before now! It must be pretty tenacious to show teeth to photographers! It's too small to take on such large critters :) Nice work!
