Dickens at 200

Today marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, one of the best-loved authors in the English language.
His work was hugely popular and his novels, many of which were serialised in magazines, were eagerly awaited by the public. Crowds are reported to have waited at the docks in New York to learn the fate of Little Nell in 'The Old Curiosity Shop'.
My parents were big fans of Dickens, particularly my father, and I read several of his novels as a teenager.
These old editions, printed over a 100 years ago, belonged to my grandparents.

Between the books, the magnifying glass and the fabric you've made a very old world feel here. I knew it was Dickens' 200th this year but had forgotten the actual date.

well-worn volumes from the master story-teller and social activist..the magnifier might well have proved useful for early readers by candlelight...great how the aged covers echo the brocade...V

Dickens is one of my faves. Every single year I read a Christmas Carol before Christmas. I almost know it by heart now. :) Fabulous still life with the aged books and a fitting tribute. V.

It just wouldn't be the same if there was Kindle there in 100 years time! The books seem to tell a story of their own.
