Red Fox

I was quite surprised to see lots of fox tracks around this morning (next two photos) because it didn’t seem like the best place to see a fox. I kept wondering about them - it was hard not to because they were everywhere - and I wondered if maybe someone let a dog run loose in the area. I was fairly sure they were fox tracks because fox tracks are distinct enough from dog tracks to be fairly easily distinguished, but I also had to consider that maybe I just didn’t know fox tracks well enough to be sure. Then I came around a corner and came face to face with this fox. Initially the fox was out in the open, but I didn’t see her as I came stomping through the crusty snow until she jumped up and ran for cover. I caught this photo here, we exchanged stares for a minute, and then she disappeared into the thick bush.

Nice find. Keep an eye on the area, you may see it again. They will soon start mating. Have fond memories last Spring observing over 16 fox pups/kits from 2 dens.

You did very well to get such a good shot through the tangled branches. Aren't they beautiful animals!
