Apple trees attract these birds. Apparently 'burdock' is their favourite food so in the spring we have to monitor the property for burdock as it can be a serious threat to birds. One summer while hiking in southern Ontario, we spotted a songbird dangling in mid air from a burdock thorn. The bird struggled to be free without success until I manually released the thorn that was attached to its eye.
