Art is?

One of the last things I did last year was take my Son to the Turner Prize at the Baltic in Gateshead, its the only time the display has been held outside London and it gave us Northerners a chance to indulge in some high class culture.

At the risk of sounding ignorant I did fail to see the "Art " in a lot of the displays.
One chap, (George Shaw) stood out amongst the rest of the "Modern Art".But the rest fell short of my minds interpretation of Art, and fell very heavily into the category of "trash"

The Cafe, set up especially for the event, gave punters a chance to put their feelings, good or bad, onto a small post-it. These Post-its where displayed for all to see. This one in particular summed it all up for me. Am I a PBase "Artist" or just an enthusiastic Photographer?

Why is it called 'modern' art? Does it need to distance itself from say, Turner, to justify its existence? Hmmm.
Good point, Kev.
I actually have the same problem with a lot of 'art' photography, in fact I see more art in the photography on Pbase, than I do in the galleries. Don't tell Saatchi though, let's keep it our little secret.

Thought-provoking stuff Kev...and a cracking pic to go with it :o)

Perhaps art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I agree that a lot of contemporary art doesn't measure up to what many of us consider art and I often think that if someone comes up with a convincing 'artist's statement' they can pass off almost anything as art. But time will be the real judge and I doubt if anyone will be celebrating exhibitions of decaying food (yes really) in a hundred year's time.

Great dof!
I'm with you Kevin ~ I don't understand most contemporary art either.
There was an external hard drive on exhibit at the Pompidou Museum in Paris 2 years ago; I had seen the exact same one for sale at my local Apple store in Delaware. Since when is an external hard drive considered art?

That's a prize winning arty post-it right there!

Modern art is questionable
