Lost Dutchman State Park
Near Apache Junction, Arizona
The Lost Dutchman mine is a purported very rich gold mine in the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, Arizona. The mine is named after immigrant Jacob Waltz. Dutchman came from American slang for German (from Duetsch.) Waltz died of pneumonia in 1891 and disclosed the location of the mine on his deathbed to his nurse, Julia Thomas. Thomas and her friends were unsuccessful in finding the mine and the legend was born.
I was in the Lost Dutchman State Park with the Superstition Mountains in the background when I took this photo (right down Route 88 from the Goldfield mine). Before we all grab our picks and head out to the Superstition Mountains in search of the lost mine, I must tell you that gold mining in the Superstition Mountains is now restricted by Title 16 of the US code (because it has been designated a Wilderness area).
