Headscarves, Aqaba, Jordan, 2011

Mannequin heads emerge from piles of fabrics in this Middle Eastern marketplace. Each wears a different color headscarf, which tells us that this market is in a Muslim country. While the color varies from head to head, the expressions of the mannequins do not, giving the scene an incongruous touch.

You are very observant, Tim -- the eyes do look in different directions. Actually, the placement of the eyes on all of these mannequins is identical, but the storekeeper has turned some of the heads in different directions, which causes the variety in eye contact here. And yes, they do seem to be blind to each other's presence.

The expression on the mannequins don't change but their eyes glance in different directions. Which seems to me to add a sense of isolation.
