20110616 366 SERIES - Wild Turkey.jpg

Ottawa

Two images of a female Wild Turkey found at The Quarry Trail park. This was the first time in three years that I had encountered or heard of there being Wild Turkeys in the Greenbelt park which originally circled the city, but is now within the city. I was actually stalking deer when a Doe and her Fawn flushed the Turkey in the tall grass. It seemed for a moment that the surprised Turkey was going to attack the Deer but the Deer kept going. When I went to investigate, the Turkey circled around me flapping its wings and making a lot of noise. At one point I thought it was going to attack me so I grabbed a stick for defense and backed off. No doubt it was protecting its young or a nest with eggs. I managed some shots from a distance.

Presently, there are some 20 Wild Turkeys in this area of the Greenbelt park. See http://www.pbase.com/hankvv/image/139872210 for my posting of one of the Toms displaying its feathers in a winter setting.

what a funny story, Hank! turkey attack!! LOL and you took a stick to that turkey, eh? poor thing was probably scared to death of the man with the big black eye!! The deer probably told the turkey to 'wing' ya! it was nice of them to flush the bird out so you could get these beautiful photos!! nice work!

What beautiful shots you have taken of this anxious female. I've seen well-grown young in July so she may well have had eggs or recently hatched young.
