THE TOWER FROM THE THAMES

England

WINNER LONDON/TOWER OF LONDON GALLERY

The Tower of London is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames. It was founded towards the end of 1066 after the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. Although the castle was used as a prison since at least 1100, that was not its primary purpose. It was originally a grand palace and served as a royal residence. It also housed the Royal Mint until the 19th century. There were several phases of expansion in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century still remains today. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace were held within its walls. This led to the phrase 'sent to the Tower'. Despite its reputation only seven people were executed within the Tower before the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the Tower Hill to the north of the castle. In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison where 12 men were executed for espionage.
At least six ravens are always kept at the Tower, because of the legend that if they are absent the kingdom will fall. They are cared for by the Yeomen Warders, known as Beefeaters. As well as having ceremonial duties, including the daily Ceremony of the Keys, the Yeoman Warders provide guided tours around the Tower.
Traditionally since 1669 the Crown Jewels have been on public display in the Tower of London.
