BATTERSEA BRIDGE

River Thames - London - England

The original wooden bridge, which replaced a ferry service that had operated since the mid-16th century, was built in the 1770s. Although dangerous and unpopular, as boats often collided with it, the bridge was the last surviving wooden bridge on the Thames in London. In 1885 it was demolished and replaced with the existing bridge. It is now the narrowest surviving road bridge over the Thames in London. Its location on a bend in the river still makes the bridge a hazard to shipping, and it has been closed many times due to collisions.

I worked in a building beside Battersea Bridge for 10 years. I saw many sights.
Dolphins going up river to Teddington lock. Seals going up river. I missed the small Whales.
Barges drifting by where the Lightermen accidentally let them go adrift. When they hit Albert Bridge I was surprised they did not sink.
A dead body outside the firm when the tide went out. Quite sad. Even worse a man climbed over the side of Battersea Bridge and was getting the courage to jump. Of course there are always Morons who kept shouting jump. Anyway he jumped. as soon as he hit the water he started screaming help. He obviously could not swim. He drifted slowly down the river towards Albert Bridge still screaming. As he got to the bridge he went under. And about one minute later a Police boat came racing down the river. But they never found him.
That was really sad.
Your photo just brought back a lot of memories. I was 15 when I went there, and 25 when I left.
