Piptoporus betulinus grows exclusively on dead branches or trunks of birch trees. It is an annual that fruits in summer and autumn. Like most polypores, it tends to persist throughout the winter months. Though the cap looks a bit battered and 'old' as you can see from the pore-surface in the next two photos, this specimen is actively growing.
