This bridge is a Vertical Lift Bridge that comes up in the center to allow ships to come through.

Ah yes, the Memorial Bridge. I have been over this bridge a few times and have seen it lift the center section up to allow river traffic through. It's called a vertical lift bridge. Very interesting to watch. Too bad they are going to be closing it. Nice image showing this unusual structure. V
