MiG-23UB 2710/66(r) of 296APIB landing at its homebase Grossenhain in June 1991. A regular MiG-27 regiment, like 296APIB, had some 9 MiG-23UB's in service for training purposes. The UB's only had limited operational capacity due to the lack of radar. Some 769 MiG-23UB's were built between 1971 (initial U's, later upgraded to UB with a stronger Tumansky R-29 engine) and 1985 (for export). Avionics were based upon the MiG-23M, one of the early fighter versions.
