Today was definitely a bucket list day. Our tour group took a bus down the Peruvian coast to Pisco. We did a boat tour out to the Ballestas Islands which was interesting. Lotsa birds and a major guano producing area. The real highlight, however, was seeing the Nazca lines in the desert. We flew in a Cessna 208 (Caravan) out to the lines and spent about half an hour circling around. Some of them were hard to see, most of them were difficult to photograph. We went early in the afternoon so the sun was just about overhead. I would like to do it again some time in the early morning or late afternoon. Anyway, this is one of the figures, a hummingbird. I have to say this part of the adventure was unbelievably cool. Scratch Nazca lines off the bucket list and add it to the do it again list.
p.s. Before John Cooper asks, this figure is probably 50-75 meters long.
They are pretty much left alone. You see occasional vehicle tracks in the area. My understanding is that they are pretty hard to see from the ground. The lines are made bu clearing the area of the rocks on top revealing the white material below. This is a desert area so not much is happening.
Good shot, I had always thought it was a lot bigger. You are the first person I have seen who took the shot and mentined the size.
Are these kept in this condition, or left totally alone ?.
