Worshippers, Cuenca, Ecuador, 2011

The five men were standing in the back of San Alfonso Church during a Sunday mass. I found their facial expressions and body language nicely expressed how they felt about this moment in time. It was a somber, reflective scene, and I converted the image from color to black and white in order to intensify the mood.

Thanks, Iris, for seeing the relationship of my black and white conversion to the reactions of the people at this moment in the church service. The rapt expressions and the divergent body language tell their story best without competition from the color of their clothing or their surroundings.

By converting this image to black and white, you've created a very dramatic and expressive image. The body language, from the glaring man in the foreground to the varied and somber stances of the other four, add to the drama of the moment.
