Double blowout.
Here's a lesson for all photographers: ALWAYS carry a roll of electrical tape in your camera bag.
(Duct tape would work, too, but the roll is so big, you'd need a large camera bag.)
I had been asked to shoot candids at a reunion event. In mid-afternoon, I had to make a 15-minutes walk to another venue,
during which I noticed that my left shoe felt kind of funny--flopping around a bit, as if it was untied. But it wasn't.
After I got to the venue and scouted around it for the best PoV of the stage, I discovered that the inner sole of my left shoe was
dangling out at a 90° angle. There was nothing I could do but tough it out. After that part of the event, walking back to the starting point,
I realized that the heavy elastic band I had around my lens (in case it came in handy for something) would address the problem,
and it made the rest of the trip easier. I remembered the roll of electrical tape I had in my camera bag in the car, and put it to use.
It would have taken me an hour to get another pair of shoes from my lodgings, during which I would miss a lot of photo ops.
So I just shuffled my way through the cocktail hour with the taped-up shoe. Then, halfway through the buffet meal
at this semi-formal event, I discovered that my right shoe had blown, as well.
These weren't cheaperino shoes, either; they were made by a well-respected Irish shoe manufacturer.
