Notes for JAMES WILLIAM HOWELL:
The following information was all provided by Neva Lee Howell Braswell, daughter of Joseph Israel Howell.
James William Howell and his wife Louisa Cheshire Howell arrived in Newton Co. Texas in January of 1872 having made the trip from Alabama with several other families in two covered wagons. Eight of James' children were in the group; William James, Marmaduke Pleasant, John Baker, Cornelius Reagan, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, Sophronia Lucetta and Susan Sylvia. Joseph Watson did not go to Texas. Marmaduke and his wife had three children born in Alabama. Marmaduke's inlaws, Israel and Mary Ann Gunter, went to Texas with them. Most of the family purchased adjoining land in Newton County. Some of the deeds indicate that some of the land was in Jasper County. Thier settlement was named Howell, Texas. A postoffice was established on August 10, 1889. Susan Collins and her husband, Emmanuel were the only post masters in Howell. On March 31, 1900 the office was moved to Holly Springs.
By 1900 most of the families had moved to other parts of Texas. Marmaduke and his family continued in Newton County. After Marmaduke and Susannah died Joseph continued to farm the land. He purchased several tracts of land before he married Neva Gunter in 1911. Joseph continued to care for Sophronia who lived longer than any other member of the family.
Marmaduke Pleasant Howell served in the Union army during the Civil War even though he was a native of Georgia. He took the oath of allegiance to the U.S. Government on May 10, 1864. His army record states that he was a farmer.
About 10 years after Marmaduke arrived in Texas the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service sent him to North Carolina to learn to build terraces. Marmaduke then built the first terraces in Texas in 1882 as a demonstration to other farmers.
Most of James Howell's children were well educated. some received their education in Alabama. Henry and John were attorneys and attended Southeast Texas Male and Female College in Jasper Texas.
A plot of ground belonging to J. B. and R.A. Howell was designated for a Howell Cemetery in 1876. Sophronia Lucitta Howell Fleming, James William Howell, Marmaduke Pleasant Howell and their spouses are all buried there. The last person buried there was the infant son of Joseph and Neva Howell on March 16, 1931. The cemetery is located soutwest of Newton Texas. Directions are to go south on highway 87 about three miles, turn right on farm road 2939, go about three miles, cross White Oak Creek on to cross roads, turn right , travel about two miles, go through a cattle gate, then on the right there will be another gate, 200 yards past the gate is the cemetery with a cyclone fence around it.
The Texas Historical Commission has provided a historical marker for the cemetery which reads; HOWELL CEMETERY The family of James William (1805-1876) and Louisa Cheshire(1816-1899) Howell came to this area from Alabama in 1872. Family members bought adjoining land and the settlement, named Howell, was granted a post office in 1889. One Howell, Marmaduke, introduced the concept of terrace farming to Texas in 1882. A one-acre plot of land was designated a cemetery in 1876. The oldest marked grave is that of a Howell grandson, Robert Lee Howell (1871-1875). The cemetery was deeded to the Howell descendants by one of James and Louisa's sons in 1914. Texas sesquicentennial 1836-1986.
