Small Milkweed bugs (Lygaeus kalmii), adults and nymphs

There were hundreds of these milkweed bugs, both adults and nymphs, on the milkweeds in one small area along a trail in Larose Forest. Nowhere else did we see this huge aggregation of these pretty bugs. The adults are the larger black and red bugs. The nymphs are smaller and have little black 'shoulder patches' on their red backs. You can see a cluster of youngsters in the middle of the group of adults.

Red and black, good for playing checkers, and all seem to be pretty involved in the game. Thanks for the biology update. You are educating me like no one else has done.

I have seen these beetles. I learn so much from your photos. These are pretty even if they are devouring the milkweed. :) V.
