Three images of the bird colony at Elliston, all taken from the mainland at 300mm.
We arrived in Elliston about mid-day and checked into Elliston B&B, operated by Doug and Brenda Cole. Another very pleasant stay. Doug advised that the Puffin colony was only about a five minute drive away and then a 10 minute walk via a marked trail. We immediately decided to check it out. When we arrived it was quite foggy, however, I managed to get some decent shots of the Puffins on the island. We stayed in Elliston two nights/days and we visited the Elliston Puffin colony four times. On two occasions, the Puffins came right on to the mainland. We also drove to Cape Bonavista, six km away, to check out the seabird colony there as well as several other points of interest such as " the Dungeon Provincial Park, the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, museums etc..
Top image: The Herring Gull is standing on the edge of the mainland. Some of the Puffins of the Island colony can be seen in the background.
An other image of the Puffins and some Herring Gulls on the nearest of the Bird Islands. It was taken in foggy conditions. The yellowish-green foreground is the mainland. One can see the nesting burrows of the Puffins in the grass and cliffs at the top of the island.
"I think I better not get closer, it looks like a long way down. I wonder what happened to that photographer?"
(This shot was taken right from the closest mainland edge with a 30 meter plus drop to the rocks and water below.)
