Spotted lady beetle (Coleomegilla maculata)

This small (4-5mm) indigenous lady beetle is investigating an insect cocoon. I found another one of these beetles with its face inside another insect case, eating the contents!

What an interesting and enigmatic picture. are the 2 front extensions the front legs he is investigating with? There seem to be 2 thin supports at the hind end. What are they? Another excellent macro Chrisitine.
