Found a cicada nymph climbing up a shovel (top photo) in my garden today. This nymph has just emerged from its underground nest and is looking for a safe perch on which to transform into an adult.
I brought it inside when I noticed it was being eyed by several birds outside. I transferred it to a branch and there it sat for about 4 hours. I was busy doing something else when I noticed it had split its shell and the adult was emerging. I was not quick enough to get some photos of it moving out of its shell, but I did get the photo, bottom, where you can see the nymphal shell at the end of the abdomen. You can also see the tiny wings not yet stretched out to full size. I put it in a container and about 1 hour later, its wings had straightened out and were a pale green.
