Daily News Garage, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, 2011

The former Brooklyn Garage of the New York Daily News appears as a relic from another age. Its peeling façade is streaked with rust, gradually enveloping the newspapers logo, which features an archaic Speed Graphic camera. Built in 1900, and closed in 1994, the former delivery truck garage was recently reborn as an 18,000 square foot rock climbing gym. Is owners purposely retained the newspapers rusting logo, hoping its provenance would help draw customers.

Yes, journalism made from trees is now an anachronism. While the Daily News itself is still very much in business, it must share the spotlight with its electronic brethren. The first US daily paper printed in tabloid form (1919), it was known as "New York's Picture Newspaper" from 1920 to 1991. The camera has been been part of its logo since day one (even though the Speed Graphic is now a museum piece). The paper once had more than a million readers. Now it has half that number.

Another sign of the times.......the demise of the newspaper as the internet and other technological media replace it. How many newspapers have folded in recent years? This image is a poignant tribute to them.
