Convergence, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, 2011

New York’s buildings often speak with their walls, as well as with their architecture. In this image, two eras collide on at a Brooklyn intersection. A contemporary public art mural salutes a community jobs project on one corner, while an early 20th century tile company proclaims its wares on the other. The colors seem complimentary, and somehow bridge the huge gap in time.

You are right, Iris. It does underscore the diversity that not only characterizes Brooklyn, but New York City and every other major urban area in the US. This particular sign refers to a community service organization headquartered in the building covered by the mural. You can read about the organization here:http://www.diasporacs.org/

My eye goes to the sign "diaspora" and to me that is the essence of Brooklyn and an acknowledgment of the many groups that were dispersed from their traditional homelands to settle in Brooklyn.

Thanks, Carol. I think the browns of the brick mesh well with the browns in the public art poster, and that is what bridges the gap in time here.

Interesting mix of the very old brick architecture with type only signs painted directly onto the bricks, and the more modern approach of a pictorial message. The two seem to go together as well in spite of the gap in time.
