Great black digger wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) on swamp milkweed

These wasps are impressively large (22-28 mm), and fairly common at this time of year. They spend a lot of time nectaring on flowers. But they also hunt katydids and grasshoppers with which they stock their nests for their larvae to feed on. This species, and the smaller, Sphex ichneumoneus, nest in underground burrows.
