While on vacation in Bolsover, Ontario (located near Orillia), I was sitting in wait for the ever-elusive Hummingbirds. They seem to be constantly at the feeder, that is unless I have my camera in hand. Finally I heard the familiar humming and turned to find this unique looking creature. It seemed to have many things in common with the hummingbird but was clearly something else. It was about an inch long and had a striped body resembling a bee so we dubbed it the 'Humming Bee'. Turns out we weren’t so far off as all research indicates it is a Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird Moth.
It was a challenge to photograph as it was constantly moving from flower to flower to flower, never pausing for long at a single one. It was necessary to try to anticipate what flower it would go to next. Luckily I was already set to photograph hummingbirds which requires high shutter speeds and continuous focus. I was happy to have the high ISO capabilities of the D700 for this photo exercise.
