Drought

West Virginia

Minolta Insant Pro. Polaroid Spectra Image film, expired 2007.

Months of weather in the high 80's and low 90's in a region where normal summer highs are in the upper 70's to low 80's. No rain except a very occassional thunderstorm where the water just runs off the hard dry ground.

The apples have stopped growing. The leaves are turning yellow and falling off the trees. The hay turned brown and died in the field. The farmers just baled it any way. There will be no second planting.

When that happens, the herd is slaughtered because there is no food for them over the winter. That in turn drives the price of beef down. Everyone's garden, and everyone has one, has burnt up.

From Farm Aid in 1985. Don Henley tells the story in his song "A Month of Sundays."

Same here, Karen. Ours burned up over a month ago. Our creeks have all dried up and just keeping your trees around the house alive is a chore. I do pray for rain for you and us.

The image is a wonderful landscape recalling the classic landscape painters. Henley' song and the impact of your weather pattern this summer is more than sad. I hope you get good rain soon. V

That is a pretty picture, but the backstory is really grim indeed. The weather all over has been peculiar and hard on so many.
