Buckleys Tavern

Centerville, Delaware

The house where Buckley's Tavern stands today dates back to 1817 when it was originally built as a private residence.
At that time there was a blacksmith shop where the parking lot is now located and Kennett Pike was just a dirt road.
Stage coaches used to stop here; and the front porch, complete with rocking chairs, protected waiting passengers from the inclement weather.
On the front porch was a toll gate to collect tolls from those traveling to and from Wilmington.

In the 1930's, the house became a popular tap room and ice cream store.
In 1951, it was taken over by Dennis Buckley, who gave the tavern its current name.
Dennis was a congenial character who, along with his son Alyn, ran Buckley's until 1970 when it was sold to its present owners.

Buckleys has always been a favorite meeting place for all kinds of folks.
From world-renowned artists to professional athletes, from our everyday local clientele to travelers passing through.

Buckley's Tavern is a place where Rolls Royces rub wings with pick-up trucks in the parking lot!

This used to be one of my favorite watering holes back in my pre-wedded days!

Looks like a cool place. I'd like to go inside and hang out. Bet it is full of character inside as it is on the outside. Nice!

In 1817 we only had Maori mud huts in NZ. I love seeing historical buildings, and reading their history too

Nice shot. I know where it is right across the Delaware line on Kennett Pike, but I have not been inside. So marriage keeps you out of the Taverns these days?
