This is a view of the 17-in liquid hydrogen (LH2) quick disconnect - where the External Tank (ET) attaches to the Orbiter. The liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen feed lines are kept separate since hydrogen, in the presence of oxygen, is highly combustible. The propellants are mixed only inside the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) combustion chambers.
