Interlude of wolf attack

We witnessed an amazing wolf attack on this elk herd at around 8 am. We were having breakfast at the Jackson Lake Lodge and were enjoying the view of the Grand Tetons when we noticed the elk acting strangely. Far to the right of this photo is dense vegetation and several elk had alerted to something in the bushes. After several minutes, the elk began sprinting right to left and we saw several small flashes of white pursuing the elk through the brush. It was quickly apparent this was a pack of wolves coordinating an attack. The wolves - we spotted seven, five light colored grey wolves and two dark grey wolves - corralled the elk herd into the large group seen in this photo in this meadow. The wolves came out of the brush in single file then spread out around the herd and began an attack. They were able to bring an elk calf down, but an adult female elk went after the wolves, enabling the calf to get back on its feet and escape. In this shot the wolves have faded back into the brush and the elk herd has closed ranks and is heading for the lake shore. The wolves would re-emerge about 20 minutes later and pursue the herd to the lake shore. I did not have my camera with me for the intitial attack (and I'm still kicking myself for not taking it to breakfast.)
