Magnolia Bridge - Architecture in Black and White

Bayou St. John in New Orleans

The Magnolia Bridge over Bayou St. John is an iron swing bridge built in the 1800's and was converted to a pedestrian bridge in 1970. It got its name because it connected the Pitot House side of the bayou to the former site of a "Magnolia Garden", a German style beer garden founded by George Merz in 1870.
The silver painted bridge is rusting and in need of repair and local residents are conducting studies and looking for grants to save the historic bridge because the City has no money.
In the background is the dome of Holy Rosary Church on Esplanade Avenue.

A rusting, deteriorating bridge is so symbolic of what's going on in the world between political parties and between cultures. A very thought-provoking image.

I love these old bridges, I hope it can be maintained as a pedestrian bridge, nice shot, Coleen.

I'm liking that it is still in use. Hopefully , it will get restored.

It would probably take more money than you might think, gallons of paint, wire brushing in preparation, and some government department saying it needs to be raised 6 inches to comply with some rule or another! Nice photo of the bridge.

Beautiful old bridge, I hope they save it. Watching a swing bridge move is so cool, although I don't like it when I'm running late! Like the church dome in the background here too!
