Backyard Visitor

Our Backyard

Our backyard pond been ravaged regularly by families of raccoons over the past couple of years and after innumerable tries at raccoon proofing it I came up with my latest version....'the cage'. I've spent hours constructing 'the cage' and it seems to be working. The neighbours pond was decimated a couple of nights ago and they didn't touch mine.

So.....I'm out working on the last touches before declaring 'the cage' done for the summer....I look up in a large maple tree that borders our yard and what do I see but three raccoon kits sleeping away the afternoon. Despite the fact that I've almost declared all out war on these animals I just couldn't pass up a shot of the babies. This entailed a trip about the block to the neighbors deck to get a better angle on things. After numerous shots I called it quits and came home feeling somewhat conflicted about the whole situation. Resolved: As long as the little darlings stay out of my pond I guess I'm happy sharing the backyard with them.

Nice shot! People here feel the same way about possums and bush turkeys (although the turkeys aren't nearly as pretty as this) ...... both species are now protected by law so suburban gardeners are forced to think of defensive measures which sound the same as you are constructing ..... not the most aesthetic things in most gardens but necessary. Funny but I can read evil intent in the eyes of your raccoon! A great shot through the branches!

Very cute! And, yes, very bratty too. It's hard to resist that face though. Good luck!

What mischief or mayhem hides behind that too cute face? They do wear a mask for a reason!
